Netflix To Premiere Hip-Hop Drama 'The Get Down' In 2016

NETFLIX HAS COME UP WITH A HIP-HOP SHOW OF ITS OWN

With their original series Orange Is The New Black becoming a favorite among millions, Netflix is back with another show that uses 70’s hip-hop as its muse.

The Get Down follows a group of friends who navigate the gritty and broken down streets of the turbulent South Bronx during the 1970s. While having nothing and no one, accept their brotherhood, they keep themselves busy with dancing, graffiti and everything that the up-and-coming hip-hop culture embodied at that time.

“In this golden era of TV, the Netflix culture puts no constraint on creative possibilities,” Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix, told The Hollywood Reporter. “So it is a natural home for The Get Down, a project I have been contemplating and working on now for over 10 years. Throughout, I’ve been obsessed with the idea of how a city in its lowest moment, forgotten and half-destroyed, could give birth to such creativity and originality in music, art and culture. I’m thrilled to be working with my partners at Sony and collaborating with a team of extraordinary writers and musicians, many of whom grew up with and lived the story we’ve set out to tell.”

The series, which was created by director and producer Baz Luhrmann, has been in the works since 2013 and will be premiering in 2016 with 13 episodes.
