DJ Premier Tapped To Score 1990’s Set Movie “The Breaks” For VH1

THE LEGENDARY PRODUCER WILL PROVIDE THE SOUNDS FOR THE HIP HOP THEMED FILM

(AllHipHop News) Hip Hop producer DJ Premier is already performing as one half of PRhyme with Royce Da 5’9″, creating his own live band, and finalizing his album Last Session @320The founding member of Gang Starr can now add score a television movie to his to-do list.

Premier has been selected to compose the score and serve as executive music producer of the upcoming VH1 original movie The Breaks. Seith Mann (The Wire, The Walking Dead) is writing and directing the motion picture inspired by journalist Dan Charnas’ The Big Payback.

The 2011 book provides a history of the Hip Hop business from the 1970’s to the mid 2000’s. The Big Payback covered the rise of Hip Hop moguls such as Jay Z, Sean “Diddy” Combs” and Russell Simmons.

The Breaks will center around three friends’ journey to break into the music industry in 1990. Nikki Jones is a recent graduate pursuing her dream of becoming a record executive. David Aaron is Nikki’s boyfriend that also happens to be the son of a legendary music producer. DeeVee is an aspiring producer searching for the next big rapper.

Premier’s history of working with early 90’s emcees Guru, Lord Finesse, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane, Nas, and many others gives him a unique firsthand perspective on the sounds from the era.

Mann is also serving as executive producer for The Breaks. Charnas is credited as executive producer and co-writer for the script’s story. VH1 plans to start principal photography in June with a premiere date set for Fall 2015.
