After not scoring any number one albums in 2013, hip-hop is now a dominating genre again thanks to streaming.
Buzzfeed reports 29 percent of all on-demand streaming in 2014 was hip-hop and R&B, beating out rock at 25 percent, pop at 21 percent, EDM at seven percent and country at six percent. Services involved in this Nielsen Music analysis include Spotify, YouTube, Rdio and Rhapsody.
Four of the top five albums in streaming over the past six months were hip-hop projects from J. Cole, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, Kendrick Lamar, To Pimp A Butterfly, Big Sean, Dark Sky Paradise and Drake, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. Hip-hop reigned supreme again when Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” became the song to receive the most streams in a week with 21.9 million.
