BUT ARE THEY RIGHT?

It seems like Nicki Minaj’s fans are causing quite a stir after Iggy Azalea won the Billboard Music Award for Top Rap Song. The Barbz have started a petition calling for Iggy’s song ‘Fancy’ to be stripped of the award due to ineligibility. After the awards, a tweet from Nicki Minaj caused fans to dig deep. With over 20,000 signatures Minaj’s fans are demanding that the award be handed over.

Fans dug and found what they thought was the the eligibility info. Once eligibility information “was found”, the fans started a petition on Change.org which reads:

“The eligibility time period for nominations is March 10th, 2014 through March 2015 ‘Fancy’ was released on February 17th, 2014, nearly a month before the eligibility starting. This is unfair to the other nominees in this category, especially to “Anaconda” by Nicki Minaj, who most likely would’ve won. Billboard did not follow their own guidelines and should have to recalculate these nominations without “Fancy” as a nominee.”

A rep for the Billboard Music Awards’ production company, Dick Clark Productions, told the International Business Times that the song was eligible and clarified the guidelines. The March-to-March period that Billboard monitors is not based on a song’s release date, but rather its chart performance and sales data within those 12 months. Dang Barbz! Almost doesn’t count.
