With Post Malone’s omission from the 2016 XXL Freshman Class cover, him claiming to not be a rap artist, as well as his plans to veer off into a rock, pop and country direction, many wonder if Malone is a culture vulture. It seems clear that at some point in his career he considered himself a Hip Hop artist with his song “White Iverson” and his appearance. Well after his popularity grew he stated publicly, the claim, that he didn’t make rap music.
XXL’s editor-in-chief, Vanessa Satten, stated that he was left off of the Freshman Class list because she was told by his camp that he wasn’t giving attention to Hip Hop so much as he was going in the direction of the previously named genres. Do you feel like Post Malone used Hip Hop to gain notoriety, or do you believe he just showed how versatile he is as an artist?
