Marlon Wayans, Meagan Good, Larenz Tate & More Take Part In #SomedayIsToday PSA (VIDEO)

THE VIDEOS WERE INSPIRED BY BALDWIN’S ‘MY DUNGEON SHOOK” & THE BLACK LIBERATION GROUP MOVE

(AllHipHop News) Filmmaker Tommy Oliver tapped several high-profile entertainers to use their celebrity as a way to bring awareness to the social injustices facing people of color in America.

The Campaign Zero supported #SomedayIsToday public service announcements feature appearances by Marlon Wayans, Meagan Good, Larenz Tate, Cedric The Entertainer, Alfre Woodard, Luis Guzman, Tika Sumpter, Michael Ealy, Omar Epps, Boris Kodjoe, Nicole Ari Parker, Affion Crockett, Kimberly Elise, and many more.

Oliver was inspired to create the PSA after reading James Baldwin’s 1963 essay My Dungeon Shook – Letter to my Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of Emancipation and conducting research on the Philadelphia-based black liberation group MOVE which was founded in 1972.

He noticed the correlation between the denunciation of systemic racism, police brutality, and wrongful
incarceration found in My Dungeon Shook and the MOVE guidelines with the current focus on those same issues over 40 years later.

The question was then asked: When is someday? By having the Hollywood stars recite the words to the classic Civil Rights Movement protest song “We Shall Overcome,” the intent of the video is to declare that day is now.

“The #SomedayIsToday messaging presents the opportunity for today,” states Oliver. “Marking the day we take control of our narrative, take control of our heritage, take control of not only our own lives, but more importantly, the lives of those who look like us.”
