MadeinTYO Gets Vocal With Sprite At 2018 BET Hip Hop Awards

Inspired by Hip Hop, Sprite's Get Vocal campaign is encouraging the youth to speak out about issues that matter to them.

(AllHipHop Features) Inspired by Hip Hop, Sprite has birthed not only a stage, but a movement of self-expression entitled Get Vocal.

Sprite's Get Vocal campaign serves as a call to action aimed to increase the voices of young Americans by encouraging them to speak out about issues that matter to them.

Hip Hop, the original stage of self-expression, inspired Sprite and the Get Vocal movement to set up a stage and literal platform for a number of Hip Hop veterans and emerging stars to express their point of view in a creative way at the Get Vocal stage at the 2018 BET Hip Hop Awards.

With the campaign, Sprite will be aligning with various tastemakers and artists to give a platform to their substance-filled freestyles [over the Get Vocal Izee the Producer-produced beat], as well as encouraging individuals to get involved.

AllHipHop had an opportunity to chat with Sprite Fresh Face alum, MadeinTYO, at the 2018 BET Hip Hop Awards Sprite Get Vocal booth.

Check out what he had to say about GETTING VOCAL below!

AllHipHop: Sprite's 'Get Vocal' is about empowering youth to use their voice to enact change and to bring about real change in their communities. How did you get aligned with Get Vocal?

MadeinTYO: Getting vocal started with me getting vocal. Me actually chasing my dreams. Whatever I really wanted to do, I put my foot forward and I chased it. Because I really wanted to do it no matter what age I was or whatever. I believed in myself, and I feel like that's the first step of getting vocal: believing in yourself and getting out there.

AllHipHop: When did you start using your music as a message for the community?

MadeinTYO: I would have to say when I started uploading things to Sound Cloud. Really just starting to record myself to find that. Mentally it was helping me. It was an outlet. If I had to put a time on it, it was 10th,11th grade. Maybe I really felt comfortable like you know what, "This is what I do. This is what I want to show people I do, and this is what I want to be known for. So I gotta manifest it and really get vocal with it, and be like I'm going to do this. I'm going to be a rapper. This is going to happen. I'm going to be a rapper. I'm going to be an artist." So I would say like 10th or 11th grade.

AllHipHop: What would you say to young people who feel like their voice isn't being heard?

MadeinTYO: That everybody's watching them. Everybody's listening to them even when people say that they aren't listening to them. Or they feel like they aren't being heard. There's someone that's probably bigger taking little pieces here and there trying to create something new. So I feel like...definitely I feel like people are always watching.

AllHipHop: As a Hip Hop artist, Hip Hop has always been instrumental about getting the message out and being vocal. Who are some of your favorite lyricists and storytellers in Hip Hop?

MadeinTYO: Storytellers let's go. Kendrick, Big Sean, J. Cole. RIP Mac Miller. A lot of real real "Hip Hop Hip Hop" people. I don't listen to the turnt music for storytelling, but I listen to like the music with real substance that really makes you think. Stuff that I may play around my grandmother, play with my son. You know something that's not really wild. But there's wild stories don't get me wrong, but I feel like... but I feel like those are the artists I grew up on: Kanye and certain people like that. Real Hip Hop artists out here. I feel like their story has come across me, it's registered right, and it has set with me the right way, and I love those artists.

AllHipHop: Since you are on the Get Vocal Stage, what are some of the biggest issues our community is facing right now?

MadeinTYO: There's a lot. I'm going to list a few.... I feel like a lot of political stuff that I don't really want to talk about, but you know the political stuff right now and everything is not in the best shape as far as that. I'm not going to get into detail because I'm a rapper; I don't want to talk about that. But, I feel like a big thing right now is validation. A lot of like [things] like with our social media from everything like awards. Whatever the case is if you don't have this or you don't have this on. Trying to impress people. I feel like it's a big thing like mentally wise. It might be a person that'll feel like I'm not as fly or I don't have as many followers, or I don't have this or whatever, but that's the biggest battle.

I feel like nowadays we have social media... all of this. People getting killed over social media all types of things to where this is becoming people's life... Kanye said it straight the other day where I wish that there was no following or it could go blocked where people couldn't see it just so we really see how people treat us. I feel like it's a big thing right now.....I'll see that someone passed away online before I see it in person or hear about it word of mouth. I feel like the social media validation and chasing that is a big thing. I feel like you don't have to chase that. Self-love is everything. Don't look for that validation online. If you're waiting for that, you may not get it. Self love...is the best thing to do. I feel like that's the biggest thing in our life and biggest thing in our community is self love....I feel like that can save a life [with] just loving yourself.
