PayAttention knows how to make a hit — and now he’s making his own. It was during school at Full Sail University when PA got his name, after his first placement on Maino’s “Let It Fly” featuring Roscoe Dash.
What began as a hobby beatboxing soon turning into making beats, when a random song began with the words “pay attention” and somebody asked if it was his name. It was a wrap ever since.
AllHipHop: How’d you end up producing “Love You Better” by Christian Combs & Chris Brown?
PayAttention: I linked with Christian Combs when I went to New York, I was at the Quad Studios. I was going up and in the elevator was Busta Rhymes, etc. I walked into a studio because I was with an artist that I was developing at the time, Luvaboy TJ. He knew somebody in the Christian Combs’ camp, so that was my way in there. I walked in, there were probably like 50 people in the room. Everybody’s vibing. Christian Combs was working on his project, and I immediately know that I have his single. Before I leave to say “nice to meet you” and everything, I said “listen, I got you a single. I’m leaving, but I’ma send it to you. When you hear it, if you like it, call me.”
Before I got back to the house, he was calling me. [laughs] It’s crazy. That turned into the “Love You Better” record.
AllHipHop: Talk about transitioning from producer to your own artistry.
**PayAttention:**It wasn’t so easy because it’s easier to be a producer. It’s easier to be behind the scenes, easier to tell people what to do and how to sing. Even though I’m doing all of that and been developing artists my whole career, the hardest thing was to develop myself. Have the confidence, what style I’ma do, the whole thing.
AllHipHop: What’s been the best part?
PayAttention: The best part is that I get first dibs on my beats. [laughs]
AllHipHop: Most difficult?
PayAttention: I try not to have any difficult parts, I try to just have fun. Not plateauing [has been hard]. Getting to the next level. Getting fans.
AllHipHop: Talk about working with Young Thug, the legend.
PayAttention: Working with Thugger was amazing. He’s definitely a workaholic. His camp is real cool. Thug is the type of person who goes in the booth and will knock out a whole song in 20 minutes. I call it yogurt! Yogurting on the mic, coming up with the whole melodies to the words, the whole thing.
Chris Brown is the same way. Chris Brown is probably the hardest working person in the music industry in my opinion. For sure. You gotta think, he dropped a two disc album. 45 songs! You know how many songs he has?
AllHipHop: And that album is amazing.
PayAttention: Amazing right? Chris will knock out 10 songs in a whole 6 hour session. It’s crazy for real.
AllHipHop: What are some goals yourself as an artist at this point of your career?
PayAttention: Produce the hit for myself! I have a couple already for sure. My next single after “Back To You” is definitely a goal reacher. Definitely have the strongest core fanbase that any artist could have, that’s a goal for me. Really my goals are what my fans goals are.
AllHipHop: What can we expect on the album?
PayAttention: My album is all me, no features. Co-produced by Mark Batson (Eminem, Beyonce, Dr. Dre’s music consultant). Don’t take that lightly! Mark Batson is doing an album with Yo-Yo Ma right now, the Mozart of our generation right now. He’s on a couple commercials playing the cello. Mark Batson is our generation’s Quincy Jones low key. It’s something that you haven’t really heard before. With the sounds, I have my own lane. I even have a record where I’m beatboxing. I brought the whole beatboxing back. I’m definitely the new Doug E. Fresh for sure. I’m that guy. You’re not gonna hear the same sound twice.
For example, I produced and was Flo Rida’s engineer for almost 2 years. I can do the pop all the way to the hip-hop. You’re never going to hear anything twice.
