(AllHipHop News) Rakim "A$AP Rocky" Mayers' trial in Sweden is underway. The New York City-raised entertainer entered a not guilty plea to assault. The charges carry a maximum sentence of two years in prison.
Rocky has been in custody in the European country since July 3. He was arrested following a violent altercation on the streets of Stockholm. Video of the incident spread across the internet.
Prosecutors claim A$AP Rocky and two members of his entourage beat and kicked the alleged victim, Mustafa Jafari, in the Swedish capital on June 30. He was also reportedly struck with a bottle.
Photographs of Jafari’s injuries, which supposedly included a broken rib and cuts to various parts of his body, were released to the public. Mayers' legal team insist the defendants were acting in self-defense and "no bottle has been used to hit or injure anyone."
Rocky's ordeal in Sweden became an international political issue when U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted about Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven's lack of involvement in the case. Trump was criticized by other rappers, such as Lil Yachty and Cardi B, for attempting to use A$AP Rocky to pander to the African-American community.
