Aaliyah's Mother Responds To Claims Singer Was Caught Having Sex With R. Kelly

Diane Haughton calls backup performer Jovante Cunningham a liar.

(AllHipHop News) R. Kelly played a big role in bringing Aaliyah to the masses. The R&B vocalist produced the teenager's debut studio album Age Ain't Nothing But A Number.

There were also reports that Kelly and Aaliyah secretly wed in 1994 when she was just 15 years old. An alleged marriage certificate incorrectly listed the singer as 18. Kelly was 27 at the time. The marriage was reportedly annulled.

Years later, Robert Kelly would be accused of pedophilia, physical abuse, and mental abuse on multiple occasions. The Lifetime network is now running a docu-series titled Surviving R. Kelly featuring alleged victims of the Grammy winner.

On one of the episodes, a former backup singer named Jovante Cunningham supposedly claims she saw Kelly and Aaliyah having sex on a tour bus back in the 1990s. Aaliyah's mother, Diane Haughton, released a statement blasting Cunningham.

Haughton wrote:

The woman and so-called back up singer in the forthcoming 'Surviving...' documentary that described seeing, meeting, or ever breathing the same air as my daughter, Aaliyah, is lying and is a liar. My husband and I were always on tour with her and at interviews and every place she went throughout her entire career. Whoever this woman is, I have never seen her before anywhere on planet Earth, until now These lies and fabrications cannot be tolerated and allowed to be spewed from the forked tongue of saboteurs of Aaliyah's legacy. My daughter only wanted to realize her dream of sharing her talent with the world, and give her all performing on stage, and in front of the camera for the fans she adored so much. She realized that dream, thanks to those true fans who still love and support her legacy unconditionally to this day. Shame on all those involved in this project who thought it kosher to drag Aaliyah's name into a situation that has nothing to do with her today. Once again, this will not be tolerated.

Aaliyah Dana Haughton died from a plane crash in The Bahamas on August 25, 2001. She was 22 years old. Surviving R. Kelly is scheduled to premiere on January 3 at 9 pm ET on Lifetime.

The fact that they brought Aaliyah into this documentary without her being here to defend herself is cringing. Whether it happened or not it was not lifetimes place to speak on it. I agree with mom on this one!

Ms Haughton, I can appreciate you wanting to protect your daughter and her legacy but with all respect YOUR daughter married him! A 27 year old man married your 15 year old daughter WITHOUT your permission...so you were NOT ALWAYS with her. To discredit these women and shame them after they have FINALLY gotten the courage to speak up PUBLICLY.... SHAME ON YOU! You should be speaking up with them FOR YOUR DAUGHTER! If you can’t do that you should at least let these beautiful black women FINALLY be heard and respected. Regardless if you don’t want to believe it/support them NO ONE is going after Aaliyah. It’s not about her it’s about a very sick man and justice for all he has tortured throughout the years! WAKE UP

...but...Aaliyah was married to the nigga for a minute...so...it's kinda safe to say that there was a sexual element to the relationship. NO DISRESPECT toward Aaliyah's memory! Surely Diane Haughton felt some kinda way about the marriage; some grown ass nigga married your teenage daughter! Fuck the backup singer for a second; some 27 year old man married your 15 year old daughter! The marriage kinda supports what these women are talkin about though. And, let's be real, if these were white women making these claims, that nigga Kells woulda been underneath the prison.
