(AllHipHop News) 2019 is expected to be a big year for Dreamville Records. DMV vocalist Ari Lennox released the label's first project of the year.
Shea Butter Baby is the debut studio album from Lennox. The LP features contributions from fellow Dreamville representatives J.I.D and J. Cole.
"I didn’t really think Cole was into me. He was cool, but he was talking about EarthGang the whole time. ‘Cause EarthGang, is probably one of the most brilliant groups out, so I was definitely honored to be learning about them through Cole, but I was jealous," Ari told Billboard in 2018.
She continued, "I was like, ‘Damn, he loves them! I wish he would love me like that. Damn the shade.’ But it wasn’t like that [at] all, Cole is just hard to read sometimes."
Fans of the Dreamville collective are expecting a new body of work from Cole in the coming months. Artists on the imprint - including Ari Lennox, J.I.D, and EarthGang - also teamed up to record songs for the forthcoming Revenge of the Dreamers III compilation.
In addition, Lennox is headed out on her first headlining tour. The journey kicks off May 12 at Phoenix's Crescent Ballroom. Baby Rose, Mikhala Jené, and Ron Gilmore Jr. are scheduled to join the 28-year-old singer-songwriter.
