(AllHipHop News) Ermias "Nipsey Hussle" Asghedom will be recognized at the 19th annual BET Awards on June 23. The late entertainer/entrepreneur/activist earned a posthumous nomination for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, and he is also being commemorated with the prestigious Humanitarian Award.
“As a prolific artist and leader, Nipsey Hussle was zealous about driving change for the betterment of his community, empowering and employing those in need and being an influential and highly respected activist," said Connie Orlando, Executive Vice-President, Head of Programming at BET. "His passing was a tremendous loss to the entertainment industry and to the culture."
Orlando adds, "We will continue to remember his advocacy and be inspired by the groundwork he set forth and his dire commitment to social change. We are forever grateful, humbled and honored to have experienced his presence and we are invested in doing our part to ensure that the marathon will indeed continue. It is an immense honor for us to recognize him with this year’s Humanitarian Award."
YG, Mustard, DJ Khaled, and John Legend will perform a tribute to Hussle during the live show in LA's Microsoft Theater. Fellow West Coast representatives YG and Mustard were frequent collaborators with Neighborhood Nip. DJ Khaled and John Legend appeared alongside The Marathon mixtape creator on the 2019 record "Higher."
Previous recipients of the BET Humanitarian Award include Muhammad Ali, Harry Belafonte, Quincy Jones, Alicia Keys, Wyclef Jean, Dwyane Wade, Jesse Williams, and Chance The Rapper. The 2019 BET Awards will also honor Mary J. Blige with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Tyler Perry with the Ultimate Icon Award.
