(AllHipHop News) Belcalis "Cardi B" Almánzar's ethnicity has been a big topic of discussion throughout her career. The Grammy winner is the bilingual child of a Dominican father and a Trinidadian mother. Cardi B addressed the issue of her race in a video posted to social media.
"A lot of people don't know the difference between nationality, race, ethnicity. That's not nobody's fault. That's actually the schools' fault because schools don't be teaching this sh*t to people," said Cardi.
The 26-year-old rapper then went on to recall a conversation she had with someone that thought she was of Mexican descent. Cardi replied, "I was like, 'I'm not Mexican at all. I'm West Indian and I'm Dominican. I speak Spanish because I'm Dominican.' And it's like, 'So what's the difference between Dominican and Mexican?' And it's like, 'Everything.'"
Some people have questioned if Cardi can be considered Black or African-American. The Bronx-bred entertainer offered a response for those individuals that think she cannot claim to be Black.
"It's like, 'Cardi's Latin, she's not Black.' And it's like, 'Bro, my features don't come from f*cking white people f*cking, okay?' And they always wanna race-bait when it comes to me. That's why I have Afro features. [They say,] 'Oh, but your parents are light-skinned.' Alright, but my grandparents aren't," declared Cardi.
The "Press" performer continued, "People from the Caribbean islands - it's a mixture. It's like the first place where the slaves were taken to, especially the Dominican Republic. It was one of the first places. People don't be knowing that sh*t. Then they be so confused and they want to dictate your race so bad. It's like, 'Bro, pick up a passport or pick up a book, so you can f*cking know.'"
Other celebrities that are also of Dominican ancestry include Fabolous, Irv Gotti, Dave East, Juelz Santana, Ozuna, Karl-Anthony Towns, and The Kid Mero. Recording artists with Trinidad and Tobago lineage include Nicki Minaj, Foxy Brown, A$AP Ferg, Teyana Taylor, and Phife Dawg.
Cardi later stated, "It's crazy because some island women, some artists that are from the same islands as me, people will be like, 'Oh they're Black.' But because Cardi speaks Spanish to people, she's not Black, even though we have similar features, same skin complexion. But no, they want to not put Cardi in it because I speak Spanish."
