Common Creating New Series Based On Books By Zora Neale Hurston

The rap star is digging into history for his new series.

(AllHipHop News) Rapper/actor Common is developing a limited series based on a newly-discovered Zora Neale Hurston book.

The Oscar winner and bosses at Lionsgate TV have gained the rights to "Barracoon" and Common plans to adapt it under his Freedom Road Productions company.

The unpublished work centers on the last-known survivor of the Middle Passage slave trade, who came to the U.S. in 1860 against his will.

Hurston interviewed the subject, Cudjo Lewis, in 1927 and the manuscript of her book was being held at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

It was released in May.
