Creed II Director Steven Caple Jr. Talks His Direction Of The New Hit Movie

Director Steven Caple Jr. converges several worlds in "Creed II." Check out how he did it.

(AllHipHop News) Creed II Director Steven Caple Jr. is the man right now, kind of like when Rocky Balboa took on Clubber Lang in "Rocky 3."

"This time around, we brought back some iconic characters," Caple told Chuck Creekmur, "For me, I wanted to make sure that the nostalgia was there. You got a piece of what you love about the Rocky franchise and then stepping into the Creed world, I wanted to make sure there were parts of "Creed" in "Creed II."

"Creed II" has two major parts to it. Adonis Creed (played by Michael B. Jordan) has to avenge the death of his father at the hands of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) by fighting his son Viktor (Florian Munteanu). Secondly, Adonis becomes a family man and father, something that also drives him.

"Ultimately, you find ways to put your stamp in there," Caple said. "Its a movie about family and fatherhood. It comes from a personal place for me and I think for Tessa (Thompson, who plays Adonis's wife Bianca) and Mike we all pulled from a personal place so we could continue this legacy.

The first "Creed" movie was a massive success and director Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Fruitvale Station) put the stamp on not only resuscitating Rocky Balboa, but he also launched Creed.

"It was cool [taking the directing reins from Coogler]. We went to USC together. The point, to see people of color like us behind the scenes as well. Him and Mike co-executive producing it and me directing, we just added to the movement," he stated.

He joked about Creed star MBJ. "I can't stand that dude. He's great, bro. What is there to say," he said fondly. "He's super talented. He wore many hats on this project as a producer. He's hands on with everything, which I love. He's never complacent. He wanted to make sure he was bigger in this movie, more meaner scene, giving it his all performance-wise. Some people could be like, 'Its part two, I know this character, I'm about to kick back, chill and relax.' But he was constantly trying to find ways to push everybody. We're going to definitely work on something else."
