The New York-bred lyricist talks about growing up listening to 1990’s rap legends.

(AllHipHop News) Harlem spitter Dave East was the latest Hip Hop representative to sit down for an interview with Montreality. During the 14-minute interview, East covered several topics.

The conversation included the creator of Paranoia: A True Story sharing his favorite lines from his Mass Appeal mentor Nas. He quoted bars from “Shootouts” off the critically-acclaimed 1996 album It Was Written.

“That sh-t was real. Nas whole sh-t real. Jay - all their sh-t real,” said East. “I just feel like I’m speaking for New York now, what’s going on in the streets today in 2017."

As far as his own music, East is looking to drop a sequel to his latest project in the near future. He announced, "Before Halloween, I'm gonna come with one more EP and then it’s album time, my real debut - end of the year, top of the year... But yeah, Paranoia 2 on the way.”

With two projects to debut in the Top 5 on the Rap Albums chart, Dave East is one of the bright new lyricists of the culture. But how does he see himself in the current Hip Hop landscape?

“I feel like I’m stuck in the middle. I grew up on all the older dudes. I grew up on 90s music - Jay-Z, Nas, Snoop, everybody, Biggie, Jadakiss,” said the 29-year-old Def Jam artist. “So I’m more into stories and talking about real personal sh-t that happened. I’m really trying to engage you on some sh-t because that’s what I grew up on.”

East continued, “But I feel like the Trap, the 808 - that sh-t is hard. That can go everywhere. It’s hard in New York. It’s hard in Atlanta. That’s why these guys are winning… It’s space for everybody, but everything’s not the same thing.”
