(AllHipHop News) After weeks of national attention, the felony charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped by Cook County prosecutors on March 26. That outcome left many Americans questioning why the 36-year-old Empire star was not convicted for allegedly arranging a fake hate crime attack against himself.
Despite spending months declaring the numerous federal, congressional, and state investigations into his own alleged infractions were part of a "witch hunt," Donald Trump now wants the Justice Department to investigate Smollett. The President of the United States addressed the situation on Twitter.
"FBI & DOJ to review the outrageous Jussie Smollett case in Chicago. It is an embarrassment to our Nation!" Trump tweeted to his 59 million Twitter followers on Thursday morning.
As of press time, the Department of Justice nor the Federal Bureau of Investigation have commented on Trump's tweet. Smollett's attorney, Tina Glandian, told The Today Show, "We have nothing to be concerned about... To my knowledge, nothing improper was done."
Smollett was indicted on 16 felony counts for filing a false police report. After performing community service and forfeiting a $10,000 bond, the case was sealed and the record involving the matter was wiped clean. He still maintains his innocence.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and CPD Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson slammed the decision to drop the charges. Many conservative pundits were also outraged that the Cook County State's Attorney office is not pursuing the case further.
Smollett claimed he was assaulted on January 29 by two masked men that called him racist and homophobic slurs, put a noose around his neck, poured bleach on him, and yelled: "this is MAGA country." His story quickly went viral, specifically because of the reference to Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan.
