(AllHipHop News) The Hip Hop world is patiently waiting to discover what sounds will emerge from the star-studded #ROTD3 recording sessions. J. Cole's Dreamville roster linked up with numerous outside artists and producers to create Revenge of the Dreamers III.
EarthGang had home-field advantage during those ten days because Dreamers III was recorded at Atlanta's Tree Sound Studios. Johnny Venus and Doctur Dot spoke to Beats 1's Zane Lowe about the experience.
"It's that family atmosphere. You know what I'm saying? It's that family atmosphere," said Johnny. "These Dreamville sessions was crazy. Everybody was just going from room to room, working on whatever. Any room you stepped in, any song you heard, you were like, 'Oh, is Space on that? Is Space? Oh, rock with me, let's do it. Let's get it on.'"
This week, the Dreamville duo dropped their own new music. "Proud Of U" features fellow ATL rhymer Young Thug. The single is set to appear on EarthGang's upcoming full-length project Mirrorland.
"We went on tour with Thug, and Jaden [Smith], and Cole last year - the 'KOD Tour.' I'm in Jaden's dressing room, and Jaden introduced me to his partner, this dude named Teo, this cat from Los Angeles who makes music," Johnny recalled. "So I'm listening and the first five, six seconds I hear this guitar riff. I'm like, 'Oh, that right there, I need that. That sounds good.' Take that, record it from off of my phone into my computer, use it as a sample, made the beat."
EarthGang officially started working on the song around Thanksgiving 2018. The track came together in Electric Lady Studios in New York City. Johnny told Lowe, "It was us, Cole, Thug, we all up there. We're really just having a good old kick it time. We're in Electric lady for like three, four days. We end up making the record up there, and it just blossomed from there. I'm like, 'Wow this is crazy how organic this was, just from a chance encounter with Jaden.'"
