‘Empire’ Producer Backs Jussie Smollett Despite Skepticism Over Alleged Attack

Plus, an Oscar-nominated director turns her attention to the Chicago Police Department.

(AllHipHop News) It appears Chicago police and a large segment of the general public are doubtful of Jussie Smollett's story about getting attacked for being gay and black. According to reports, the CPD is now investigating the Empire cast member.

Despite speculation that Smollett hired two Nigerian brothers to fake the assault on January 29, Empire executive producer Brett Mahoney is still supporting his actor. He tweeted on Sunday, "I believe and stand by @JussieSmollett. Keep your head up."

Famed filmmaker Ava DuVernay also backed Smollett after questionable new details involved with the case came to light. The director of Selma and 13th challenged the legitimacy of the Chicago Police Department.

"Despite the inconsistencies, I can’t blindly believe Chicago PD. The department that covered up shooting Laquan McDonald over a dozen times? That operated an off-site torture facility? That one? I’ll wait. Whatever the outcome, this won’t stop me from believing others. It can’t," posted DuVernay.

Smollett has not spoken publicly about the arrest and release of the two brothers that are said to have a personal connection to the 36-year-old Hollywood veteran. A few days ago, authorities stated it was "unconfirmed" that the incident was a hoax and Smollett was still considered a victim. However, CPD Chief Communications Officer Anthony Guglielmi released another statement on Sunday afternoon.

"While we are not in a position to confirm, deny or comment on the validity of what's been unofficially released, there are some developments in this investigation and detectives have some follow-ups to complete which include speaking to the individual who reported the incident," tweeted Guglielmi.
