(AllHipHop News) Naomi Campbell is to co-host the 2018 Global Citizen Festival event in honor of Nelson Mandela.
The British supermodel first met the former South African President in 1994 when she flew to the country to judge that year's Miss World competition, with the pair maintaining a close friendship until his death in December 2013 at the age of 95.
As the centenary of Mandela's birth approaches on July 18, Campbell has confirmed that she will be acting as a co-host at the Mandela 100 charity event to be held at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on December 2.
"(The concert is aimed at) inspiring people and creating awareness of the world as a global citizen - we are all a global citizen," she said, according to WWD. "Whether we like it or not, air travel, social media, climate change and television have connected us to such degree that it is no longer possible to put our heads in the sand and pretend our brothers and sisters do not exist. We are all in this together."
In addition to Campbell, celebrity names such as Bob Geldof, Gayle King, Tyler Perry and Forest Whitaker will act as co-hosts and Oprah Winfrey will make a special tribute to Mandela.
The festival will also include performances from Beyonce, Jay-Z, D'banj, Ed Sheeran, Eddie Vedder, Pharrell Williams, Chris Martin, Usher and Wizkid, with more artists set to be announced in the coming months.
Tickets to the Global Citizen Festival Mandela 100 are free. People who'd like to attend are required to visit Global Citizen's platform to apply, starting from August 21.
"Nelson Mandela's life story is a testament to the power of the human spirit and one man's ability to change the world by standing up for what he believed in," added Winfrey in a statement. "It is one of the great honors of my life to have spent so much time with him, and I look forward to celebrating his courageous life."
