(AllHipHop News) Back in May, G Herbo was among the many people that slammed Kanye West's polarizing statement about slavery being a choice. Herb wrote on Instagram, "HE A B*TCH!! HE A TRAITOR JUDAS ASS KOON ASS GEECHI!!"
The Chicago-raised emcee has since deleted the negative IG post. During an appearance on Open Late with Peter Rosenberg, Herbo explained why he had a change of heart about Ye.
"I wasn't pleased because I didn't understand the direction he was going in. I'm not saying I understand what he's doing now, but just being around Kanye - I've been around him more than once - but being around him in settings like this, where you can really talk to him, I kind of feel like he got good intentions. Not saying he's doing it the right way, but he got good intentions," said Herbo.
The Swervo album creator added, "[Kanye] told me - and it made perfect sense, 'I wasn't saying slavery was a choice like we choose to be in slavery. But slavery was a choice to me, to Nat Turner, to Harriet Tubman.' That's what he said. To Nat Turner, slavery was a choice. To Harriet Tubman, slavery was a choice. Because I have the choice to run, I have the choice to fight. That's what he was saying, but he didn't express it that way."
It should be noted that while many slaves did rebel or escape, most enslaved Africans in America were subject to physical and psychological torture that conditioned them not to resist. The laws at the time also reinforced the institution of slavery which made it extremely difficult to revolt against the system. Ultimately, it took the United States government to engage in a civil war to end slavery in the southern states.
