Hip Hop Artists Controlled 81% Of The Weeks At No. 1 On The Hot 100 In 2018

Drake and Cardi B were the King and Queen of the charts last year.

(AllHipHop News) It cannot be denied that Hip Hop ruled over the commercial music landscape in 2018. The culture was the most dominant force on the Billboard charts.

Twelve records made it to the top spot on the Hot 100 over the last twelve months. Ten of those songs included a rap act, and eight of those tunes were led by a rapper. In total, a Hip Hop lead performer or featured performer consumed 81% of the weeks at #1 on the chart.

Rappers also sat at the apex of the Billboard 200 chart a majority of the time in 2018. Eighteen Hip Hop projects were listed as the #1 album in the country for at least one week. They combined to hold the peak position for 28 total weeks (53%).

Drake, Post Malone, XXXTentacion, Cardi B, and Travis Scott were the only Hip Hop stars to have a #1 album and a #1 single in 2018. Pop singers Camila Cabello and Ariana Grande also pulled off the double-topper achievement.

In addition, Drake broke Usher's record for most weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 Chart in a single year (29). Cardi B's eight weeks atop the Hot 100 with "I Like It" and Maroon 5's "Girls Like You" helped the neophyte move past Iggy Azalea for the all-time record for cumulative weeks at #1 for a female rapper (11). She also became the only raptress with three No. 1 songs.

Young Thug, Childish Gambino, XXXTentacion, and Travis Scott scored their first respective Hot 100 Number One in 2018. The year also saw Cardi, XXX, Post Malone, Brockhampton, Metro Boomin, and Kodak Black reach the top of the Billboard 200 for the first time. Overall, Hip Hop projects made up twelve of the top fifteen selling albums of 2018.
