(AllHipHop News) On the Dirty Computer album, Janelle Monáe explored sexuality through her music. The Kansas-raised entertainer also revealed she's pansexual in a cover story forRolling Stone.
Additionally, Monáe spoke about coming out with Beats 1's Ebro Darden. The conversation featured the singer/actress talking about having to share the subject with her family.
"I'm also a queer, black woman, so when you hear your cousins or your aunts saying, 'All gay people are going to hell.' You grew up thinking: Am I going to hell?" shared Janelle. "That was something I had to deal with on this album and I had to really figure out how I was going to even communicate with my family that I love and I care about, and I know they love and care about me."
She continued, "I had to make sure that I was choosing freedom over fear. And freedom is not always free. It comes with sacrifices. It comes with losing people. My responsibility is to be honest, to being vulnerable, to making sure that girls like me who have had to feel these hurtful things... when you grow up feeling like your existence and who you are naturally is wrong, it could be a terrifying thing."
