(AllHipHop News) As a celebration of Black Music Month and LGBT Pride Month, award-winning entertainer Janelle Monáe linked with Apple Music in order to put together a special list of tracks. Her playlist includes records by Tracy Chapman, Frank Ocean, H.E.R., Jidenna, and other acts.
"June is a special month for me and for us all. It marks an important time each year when we acknowledge the great and important contributions of brilliant black artists who contributed greatly to music history," says Monáe.
She continues, "In addition, it’s the time of year in which we remember the brave members of the LGBTQIA+ community who risked their lives fighting for equal rights and human rights for all. This playlist celebrates the great artistic achievements and important cultural impact by key figures from both the black and LGBTQIA communities."
“The Apple Music family understands the impact of the Black community’s music on all popular music and we plan to celebrate it the entire month of June,” says Ebro Darden, Apple Music’s Global Editorial Head of Hip-Hop and R&B. “Hip-Hop and R&B are the most popular music genres in the world, so that makes this year even more spectacular.”
Apple Music also tapped Victoria Monét, Blood Orange, and Taylor Bennett to curate exclusive "Black Pride" playlists. The respective collections feature Janet Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Brandy, Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, and more.
"Black music and representing pride to me means freedom, and then a reminder that we need to keep pushing forward. In today’s society, we are leaps closer to equality," states Bennett.
Monét adds, "This is a random playlist of songs I love to jam out to, and some of them make me feel really included in my sexuality, ethnicity, and culture. I hope you enjoy these as much as I do!”
Blood Orange expresses, "This is my playlist that gets me through the day, music that I listen to that makes me feel proud to be who I am, and I hope it does the same for you.”
