(AllHipHop News) Jussie Smollett has had a hell of a week. After claiming he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack in Chicago on January 29, the Empire star was arrested and arraigned yesterday for felony disorderly conduct for filing a false police report.
There has been speculation that Smollett's character was being limited on the remaining Empire episodes still being filmed and producers were considering suspending him after the criminal charges were announced. However, sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Smollett returned to the show's set on Thursday.
Previously, Empire executive producer Brett Mahoney showed support for the embattled cast member. Mahoney tweeted on February 17, "I believe and stand by [Jussie Smollett]. Keep your head up."
20th Century Fox Television released a statement on February 20 that read, “Jussie Smollett continues to be a consummate professional on set and as we have previously stated, he is not being written out of the show.”
Chicago authorities claim Smollett paid Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo $3,500 to fake the hate crime assault. Police detectives believe Smollett was motivated to pull off the hoax because he was upset about his Empire salary.
Jussie Smollett was released from Cook County jail on $100,000 bail. The 36-year-old entertainer's legal team stated, “Like any other citizen, Mr. Smollett enjoys the presumption of innocence, particularly when there has been an investigation like this one where information, both true and false, has been repeatedly leaked."
