(AllHipHop News) The Cook County State's Attorney's Office has announced charges against Empire star Jussie Smollett. The 36-year-old actor is accused of disorderly conduct/filing a false police report in connection with allegedly staging a fake hate crime.
Smollett's legal team has responded to the news their client will be arrested by the Chicago Police Department. His attorneys are attempting to put attention on the CPD supposedly giving erroneous information about the case to the press.
“Like any other citizen, Mr. Smollett enjoys the presumption of innocence, particularly when there has been an investigation like this one where information, both true and false, has been repeatedly leaked," reads the statement via ABC News.
There were several reports from local news outlets that were eventually declared to be false. For example, a "tip" claiming Smollett was seen in an elevator with two brothers supposedly associated with the assault was dismissed by CPD Chief Communications Officer Anthony Guglielmi. Plus, Empire writers had to state they never planned on writing Smollett off the show despite rumors implying that potential motive for the alleged hoax was accurate.
Smollett is facing a class 4 felony indictment for the disorderly conduct charge. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to 1-3 years in state prison. A bail hearing is scheduled for 1:30 pm CT on Thursday. The FBI is also reportedly investigating whether Smollett sent a threatening letter in the mail to himself.
