(AllHipHop News) Kanye West has donated $10 million to an art project so it can be "enjoyed for eternity."
The rapper announced on Monday (14Jan19) that he was donating the large sum to the Turrell Art Foundation to help fund artist James Turrell's Roden Crater Project, in which he has created an artwork inside the crater of an extinct volcano near Flagstaff, Arizona.
In a statement, Kanye said he wanted the Roden Crater to be "experienced and enjoyed for eternity," while Turrell said he was "thrilled" by the donation at a "critical juncture of the project."
The 41-year-old visited the crater with the artist in December and tweeted, "Went to visit the James Turrell crater two days ago. This is life changing. We all will live in Turrell spaces." He returned with his team a few days later.
Turrell has been transforming the site into an open-air observatory by carving tunnels into the crater that lead to rooms. The 75-year-old has been trying to raise millions of dollars to complete his project and turn it into a creative campus, with an aim to open to the public in five years' time.
The donation news comes days after Kanye received backlash for appearing to refer to separate documentaries about sexual misconduct allegations against Michael Jackson and R. Kelly during a Sunday gospel service at the weekend.
"They want art from the artist. But, anytime they do anything erratic, they just gonna pull up the full documentaries on him. And then, they gonna come with the Michael documentary. We can enjoy all their music all we want," he said.
After people concluded that he was voicing his support for Kelly, his wife Kim Kardashian hit back on Twitter.
"Kanye was speaking about his own experience of everyone quick to say they are canceling him because of differences in opinion & not being perfect," she wrote. "I want to make it very clear, he is not condoning anyone’s actions or unacceptable disgusting behavior. My husband’s words are being taken out of context due to timing."
Kim and Kanye are currently expecting their fourth child, which will be born via surrogate.
