(AllHipHop News) Kanye West is joining fellow Chicago native Chance The Rapper in supporting Dr. Amara Enyia. Chance endorsed the mayoral hopeful last week, and now Kanye has given her campaign some needed money.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that West donated $73,540 to the dark horse candidate. The Enyia campaign is reportedly using the cash to pay off a $73,540 debt to the Illinois State Board of Elections.
With the public backing of Kanye West and Chance The Rapper, Enyia is gaining national attention which could help elevate her name recognition back home in Chicago. There are over a dozen people running to replace outgoing Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel.
Some of Enyia's opponents are already questioning her connection with West. The controversial Hip Hop artist has aligned himself with Republican Donald Trump, but Cook County voted overwhelmingly for Trump's Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.
"Kanye West has made comments in the past about slavery being the slave’s fault. He has talked about abolishing the 13th amendment," said County Commissioner Stanley Moore, a supporter of County Board President Toni Preckwinkle's mayoral run.
Moore continued, "This opens the door for Amara to answer questions about whether or not she is embracing these same philosophies. Is she embracing Trump’s policies that hurt African-Americans?”
