Kehinde Wiley Commissioned To Paint Barack Obama’s Presidential Portrait

The NYC-based artist is known for his large paintings of African-Americans, particularly Hip Hop figures.

(AllHipHop News) The Smithsonian announced award-winning painter Kehinde Wiley will create a portrait of former President Barack Obama. Wiley is well known for creating iconic artwork of Hip Hop figures like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, Ice-T, Snoop Dogg, Swizz Beatz, and more.

In additon, Amy Sherald was selected to paint former First Lady Michelle Obama. The two portraits will be unveiled in early 2018 and added to the museum's Portrait Gallery permanent collection.

“The Portrait Gallery is absolutely delighted that Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald have agreed to create the official portraits of our former President and First Lady,” stated Kim Sajet, director of the National Portrait Gallery. “Both have achieved enormous success as artists, but even more, they make art that reflects the power and potential of portraiture in the 21st century.”
