Thanks to many generous
contributions to his native Long Beach, Warren G. will be honored during the week
of August 1-6, which Mayor Beverly O’Neall has designated as Warren G. Week.
Besides aiding in his neighborhood’s development and expansion,
the rapper/producer has helped raise funds to purchase 500 pairs of reading
glasses for children, in addition to donating toys to youngsters at the California
Recreation Center with his yearly “G. Christmas” shopping spree.
The rapper also recently collected an award from Project Coordinator
Leonard Adams for time and money he spent with the youth organization, Midnight
Basketball League.
“[Warren G.] has stayed true to Long Beach and helped
others to move to the next level in life,” said the rapper’s uncle
and manager, Wron G., in a statement. “I thank the City of Long Beach
for recognizing his humanitarian activities.”
The week’s activities include a speech by Warren G. to
the Boy’s and Girl’s Club on August 3, and a culminating benefit concert on
the last two days, with guest performances expected.
The week-long celebration also overlaps the August 1 launch
of the Willie McGinest Freedom School, a summer improvement program intended
to teach African-Americans to read and write to facilitate voting.
“The City of Long Beach owes Warren G. a great amount
of love and gratitude for his continued demonstration of care and concern for
our youth,” stated Pastor O. Leon Wood, Jr. “He shows his love through
the giving of his time and resources. He is always there when needed.”
All event proceeds
go to the Willie McGinest Freedom School. Warren G.’s latest album In
the Mid-Nite Hour is expected to release on September 27.
