(AllHipHop News) The two iconic rap stars have not always seen eye-to-eye, but LL posted a video to his Instagram page which included Jay, his wife Beyoncé, and Soul/Funk legend Nile Rodgers.
According to the location marker on the IG vid, the four performers were at the Staples Center, the venue for this year’s Grammy awards ceremony. The clip included a caption that read, “Such an amazing time last night. Congratulations to everyone who won, performed and helped make last night a success. #GRAMMYs @beyonce #jayz #nilesrodgers.”
The history between the New Yorkers has been rocky. Back in the early 1990’s LL reportedly lost a series a secret rap battles to an unsigned Jay Z which led to some animosity. The “Mama Said Knock You Out” rhymer was also vocal about his displeasure for the way he was treated during Jay’s tenure as Def Jam president.
The LL/Hov cold war also included Jay taking a slight jab at his rival in a 2010 Rolling Stone article. The Roc Nation founder said at the time, “We’ve seen people like LL [Cool J] have longevity, and we respect the heritage of what he’s done, but it’s not like, right now, he’s competing on the same level as Lil Wayne.”
Then in 2013, LL downplayed Jay’s Magna Carta Holy Grail album receiving a platinum plaque because Samsung bought 1 million copies. The Queens native suggested, in his view, the RIAA certification was not as valuable as selling directly to consumers, because fans did not actually pay for the project through the Samsung deal.
LL told Revolt, “Numbers are numbers. In the numbers is truth, but in terms of touching the people it’s a little different. For me as an artist, I still want to be able to touch the people individually. It still matters to me.”
