(AllHipHop News) In August, Missy Elliott dropped off a new body of work titled Iconology. The legendary performer/producer/songwriter was one of the high-profile female rappers to release new tunes in 2019.
Missy sat down with Amazon Music to talk about Iconology and longtime musical partner Timbaland. She also spoke on women finding success in contemporary Hip Hop.
“It feels good to see a slew of women taking over. It feels good because there was a time where there was myself, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Lauryn Hill, Da Brat, Trina. It was so many of us out at one time," said Missy.
The Songwriters Hall of Famer and MTV Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award recipient added, "It feels like that wave that it was. And I think we need that. We don’t need just a one-sided perspective of life. We need a man’s perspective and we need a woman’s perspective."
Besides Iconology, this year also saw the release of Lizzo's Cuz I Love You, Rico Nasty's Anger Management, Megan Thee Stallion's Fever, Trina's The One, Iggy Azalea's In My Defense, Rapsody's Eve, Lil Kim's 9, and Kash Doll's Stacked. In addition, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, City Girls, and Saweetie made the Billboard charts with Top 40 singles such as "Please Me," "Megatron," "Act Up," and "My Type."
