(AllHipHop News) A lawyer for rapper Mystikal is convinced the star has become a victim of the #MeToo movement as he prepares to stand trial for rape and kidnapping charges.
He has pleaded not guilty to counts of first-degree rape and second-degree kidnapping and will stand trial in May.
Mystikal, who is being held on $3 million bond, appeared in court on Tuesday for a pre-trial hearing.
His lawyer, Joel Pearce, insisted his client was innocent and was only being prosecuted because of the rise of the #MeToo movement against sexual misconduct, which hit headlines in late 2017 following the downfall of disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein.
Arguing against the charges being brought against the rapper, Pearce declared, "I don't think that anyone should be made to stand trial for number one, something they did not do. And number two, something that's caught up in this political movement, the #MeToo movement. Michael is not guilty of anything."
During the court session, Pearce succeeded in having testimonies heard from two witnesses in front of a Caddo Parish District Court Judge and a grand jury in an attempt to back up his case, while a request for discovery relating to social media records is set to be heard on March 6.
Mystikal's associate, Averweone Holman, is also facing the same charges, to which he has also pleaded not guilty, [while a woman named Tenichia Wafford is charged with obstruction of justice in relation to the alleged assault.
She reportedly tried to convince the unnamed victim to drop the rape allegation.
