Nas Joins Pop Stars For Free Virigina Tech Memorial Concert

Superstar rapper Nas will headline "A Concert For Virginia Tech," a free concert featuring John Mayer, Phil Vassar and Virginia's own best-selling group, The Dave Matthews Band.

The concert takes place September 6 at Virginia Tech's Lane Stadium as the 2007-2008 school year kicks off.

The memorial event was conceived as a way for the University and the surrounding community to move forward in the wake of the April shootings at Virginia Tech, when Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people and 25 wounded, before committing suicide.

The shooting spree is the deadliest in American history.

The brutality of the mass murders shocked people around the world.

"We're extremely grateful for the compassion and generosity of these artists who wished to create a very special event where our students, faculty and staff can come together to celebrate the spirit and resiliency of our university community as we begin a new academic year," said Charles Steger, President of Virginia Tech.

All artists involved with the concert have waived their fees for the event, while corporate sponsorships and sale of commemorative items sold during the evening will help cover the concert's logistical expenses.

No funds from the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund will be used to cover expenses for this concert.

"The concert will provide a great outlet for all of the Virginia Tech community to come together once again," added Adeel Khan, President, Student Government Association.

One free ticket is available for any student enrolled for the fall semester, including full and part-time students.

Also welcome are Virginia Tech faculty, staff, wage and emergency hires and 2007 spring and summer graduates of Virginia Tech.

Tickets are not available to the general public.
