Public Poll Picks 'Black Panther' To Win The 2019 Oscar For Best Picture

Spike Lee is the favorite to win Best Director.

(AllHipHop News) The 91st Academy Awards are scheduled to broadcast live from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on February 24. Eight movies are competing for the coveted Best Picture accolade at this year’s Oscar ceremony.

Morning Consult/The Hollywood Reporter surveyed 2,201 people from January 24-27 to find out which nominees are favored among the American public. When it comes to Best Picture, respondents chose Marvel Studios’ Black Panther (27%) over A Star Is Born (23%) and Bohemian Rhapsody (22%).

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences briefly considered adding an Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film award before nixing the idea. Even when the field was expanded to a 20-movie Popular Film category in the MC/THR poll, Black Panther still beat out other blockbusters like A Star Is Born, Avengers: Infinity War, Venom, and Crazy Rich Asians.

A Star Is Born was the popular choice in the acting categories. Bradley Cooper (Best Actor), Lady Gaga (Best Actress), and Sam Elliot (Best Supporting Actor) won their respective polls.

The Favorite’s Emma Stone won the MC/THR ballot for Best Supporting Actress, and Incredibles 2 was selected for Best Animated Feature Film. If it was up to America, Spike Lee would finally win his first Best Director Academy Award for BlacKkKlansman.

Black Panther was the highest grossing domestic movie of 2018. It made more than $700 million at the North American box office and more than $1.3 billion globally.

The Ryan Coogler-directed superhero flick was nominated for 7 Academy Awards. Black Panther’s ensemble of actors recently won "Outstanding Performance By A Cast" at the 2019 SAG Awards.

The African-American Film Critics Association, American Film Institute, Black Reel Awards, Critics' Choice Movie Awards, People's Choice Awards, Satellite Awards, and the Saturn Awards also honored the movie. Additionally, Black Panther composer Ludwig Göransson won a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media.
