'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' Breaks December Record For An Animated Movie

(AllHipHop News) The computer-animated superhero movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opened at #1 this weekend with $35.4 million. HuffPost reports the Sony Pictures production broke a box office record.

The $35.4 million haul gives Into the Spider-Verse the biggest opening of all-time in the month of December for an animated motion picture. 2016's Sing previously held that record with a $35.2 million debut.

Musician/actor Shameik Moore (Dope, The Get Down) stars as Miles Morales. The cast also includes Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Nicolas Cage, Liev Schreiber, and Lily Tomlin.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has been named Best Animated Feature by the New York Film Critics Circle, Chicago Film Critics Association, and Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Plus, the movie picked up a Best Animated Motion Picture nomination from the Golden Globe Awards.

In addition, the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack is filled with songs by Post Malone, Swae Lee, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Vince Staples, Denzel Curry, YBN Cordae, Ski Mask the Slump God, Aminé, and more. The album is projected to collect 35,000 - 45,000 units in its first week.
