(AllHipHop News) Disney's The Lion King (2019) now owns the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for the month of July thanks to a $185 million haul. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 previously held the record with $169.1 million in 2011.
The photorealistic computer-animated remake starring musicians Donald Glover and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter also has the seventh-largest box office debut of all-time. It came in behind the $191 million for 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron.
In addition, The Lion King topped fellow Disney production, Incredibles 2 ($182.6 million), to now lead the list of the largest openings ever for an animated feature. The Jon Favreau-directed movie was panned by critics, but the 2019 version of Simba's story scored highly with audiences.
Besides providing the voice for Nala, Beyoncé also curated and produced The Lion King: The Gift compilation album. Donald "Childish Gambino" Glover, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell Williams, Tierra Whack, and many more artists contributed to the project.
