The Smithsonian Gets Help From Rap Legends To Chronicle Hip-Hop History Through Anthology

The Smithsonian has tapped some legends to help spearhead a huge compilation spanning the history of Hip-Hop.

(AllHipHop News) The Smithsonian Institute has launched a 30-day Kickstarter Campaign to raise money for a new, massive Hip-Hop Anthology.

The "Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap" aims to make a statement about the cultural impact of Hip-Hop, through media, visuals, and text.

The Smithsonian has commissioned legend Chuck D. of Public Enemy to serve on the executive committee for the project, which also includes MC Lyte, Questlove of the Roots, 9th Wonder, industry veterans Bill Adler and Bill Stephney, author Jeff Chang, and university scholars Adam Bradley (University of Colorado, Boulder), Cheryl Keyes (UCLA) and Mark Anthony Neal (Duke University).

"The Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap" will be produced and released by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings and will include nine CDs, more than 120 tracks and a 300-page book with extensive liner notes, essays by artists and scholars.

The compilation will also feature never-before-published photographs from the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s collection.

"The story of hip-hop is one of great triumph and evolution, and it represents the very best of black music tradition,” said Chuck D.

The project was coordinated by Huib Schippers and Dwandalyn Reece, curator for music and performing arts at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Those who decide to fund the Smithsonian project will receive a number of unique Items and return from the Kickstarter campaign.

Rewards include a set of hip-hop trading cards, an exclusive, digital-only remix by 9th Wonder, drawn from the deep Folkways archives, a tour of the National Museum of African American History and Culture led by a curator and Questlove of The Roots and more.
