(AllHipHop News) A petition to replace a Christopher Columbus monument in Minnesota with a statue of native son Prince has received over 4,000 signatures.
Launched by state resident Wintana Melekin, the petition has reached 4,221 signatures on activism website Organize For - just 800 shy of its 5,000 goal via.
The fight to honor the late music icon and replace a statue of the Spanish explorer is part of a larger movement across the U.S. to tear down monuments depicting those who have brought death and servitude to people of color.
"Across the nation, city governments are choosing to remove statues of white supremacists, slave owners, and those who threatened the livelihood of Black people," a statement posted along with the Prince petition reads. "Here in Minnesota, communities are reigniting the demand to bring down state’s monument to Christopher Columbus, a man who murdered, raped and enslaved Black and Native peoples in the Americas.
"We, the undersigned, do not believe that Columbus represents the values Minnesotans carry. Rather than glorify a man who wanted to extinguish Black and Native peoples, we should honor members of our community whose leadership we find inspirational."
Last month, fans of Missy Elliott collected signatures to replace a confederate statue in her home state of Virginia with a memorial to the rapper, and Britney Spears devotees in Louisiana called for a similar statue tribute to replace a monument to the U.S. Confederate Army.
