Tidal Launches Million Dollar Artist Grant Program To Support Emerging Musicians

Motown musicians have the opportunity to get financial support from the Jay-Z led company.

(AllHipHop News) TIDAL announced the launch of a million dollar artist endowment known as TIDAL Unplugged. The initiative is part of TIDAL Rising, a long-running effort to showcase up-and-coming talent via the streaming service.

TIDAL will present a grant to the selected artists which can be used to cover living expenses, equipment, studio time, and other costs. The finalists will create four songs for distribution that will exclusively premiere on TIDAL and receive promotion through the TIDAL Rising program.

They will also get to perform their songs in a TIDAL Unplugged showcase in November. In addition, the artists will maintain 100% ownership of the recording masters.

"The TIDAL Rising program is incredibly special to everyone at TIDAL - from the interns to the artist-owners - we recognize the power of streaming and the importance of supporting and encouraging emerging musicians,” says Jason Kpana, TIDAL SVP of Artist Relations. “Being able to expand the program to support musicians in an authentic and substantial way is truly an honor.”

TIDAL Rising alum include chart-topping rapper A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Top Dawg Entertainment singer SiR, Dreamville Records vocalist Ari Lennox, and Grammy-winning songstress Alessia Cara. The program has highlighted numerous rising musicians through documentaries, playlist features, and live performances.

BVF Partners L.P. founder/General Partner Mark Lampert and ARCH Venture Partners co-founder/Managing Director Robert Nelsen provided donations to fund TIDAL Unplugged. The program is scheduled to kick off in Detroit, Michigan on March 1, 2019 with intentions to expand into other markets. Detroit residents can apply at tidal.com.
