(AllHipHop News) For months, there have been rumors that Travis Scott would join Maroon 5 as performers at Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta. The "Sicko Mode" rapper and OutKast's Big Boi were officially announced for the 2019 halftime show earlier this week.
Scott has faced some criticism for taking the gig because activists have called for a boycott of the NFL in support of alleged blackballed quarterback Colin Kaepernick. According to Variety, Scott spoke to Kaepernick before agreeing to perform at the Super Bowl.
The publication reports:
A source close to Scott said that while the two did not necessarily agree, they emerged from the conversation with mutual respect and understanding, with the rapper taking the stance that everyone makes a statement in their own way and he felt that the money going toward Dream Corps, combined with the platform provided by the Super Bowl, will do some good. The source also said that Scott would not confirm his performance until the donation was locked in.
Scott reportedly made a deal with the NFL where the league would make a joint donation of $500,000 to Van Jones' social justice organization Dream Corps. While sources told Variety Travis and Colin came to an "understanding," Kaepernick recently retweeted his girlfriend Nessa Diab's tweet that read, "If you’re with them, then you are definitely not with us."
The Hot 97 radio personality's tweet included a screenshot of the Urban Dictionary definition of "sell out." Kaepernick also retweeted another Twitter user's January 14 tweet that read, "Selling out is a choice."
Colin Kaepernick accused NFL owners of colluding to keep him from being signed to a team after the former San Francisco 49er player helped ignite a silent protest against police brutality during the playing of the National Anthem. Travis Scott's decision to work with the league angered some fans, especially after the Texas-bred artist's 2014 interview with Hot 97 resurfaced with him saying, "I’m kind of angry, so many black people are acting like fake activists."
Kaepernick retweeted Nessa's message. He also retweeted a tweet from Hot 97's Ebro Darden that read, "Kap did not approve this bullsh*t! Get the f*ck outta here...."
