Vic Mensa Shows Support For Assata Shakur & Protests Against Police Brutality At VMAs (PHOTOS)
(AllHipHop News) “No one uses that red carpet for anything. Look at the things it’s used for – Who has the best outfit? Who has the most diamonds? Who has the best hairstyle? Who oiled their skin the best? Who really gives a f*ck?” expressed OG Maco on deciding to wear a #BlackLivesMatter inspired shirt to the BET Awards in June. The Atlanta rapper appears to have a kindred spirit in Vic Mensa when it comes to making a political statement with fashion on the red carpet.

Mensa arrived at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards wearing an outfit that included the phrases "KKKops are the biggest gangs" and "f*ck business." Perhaps the most striking message on the Roc Nation rhymer's apparel was "free Assata" referring to Black Panther member Assata Shakur.
After being convicted of killing a New Jersey State Trooper in 1973, Shakur escaped prison and received political asylum in Cuba. She was later added to the F.B.I.'s Most Wanted List.
Shakur's case has become a hot button topic for police forces, social activists, politicians, and Hip Hop figures. Many supporters believe she was falsely accused of killing Werner Foerster.
There are reports the normalization of relations between the U.S. and Cuba could lead to Shakur and other wanted individuals living in the country to be extradited back to America. Lawyers for Shakur have suggested it is unlikely she will be forced to return to the U.S.
New Jersey Governor/presidential candidate Chris Christie has condemned the Barack Obama administration for communicating with Cuba without securing Shakur will be sent back to jail. Earlier this year, New Jersey representatives introduced legislation in Congress to block any change in U.S. relations with Cuba unless Shakur is returned. However, two weeks ago the American flag was raised over the U.S. embassy in Cuba for the first time in 54 years.
