Wiz Khalifa Discusses Nearly Signing Jimmy Wopo Before His Death

The Taylor Gang leader also drafts one half of Rae Sremmurd for a new tune.

(AllHipHop News) This week saw the loss of two young Hip Hop talents. Florida rapper/singer Jahseh "XXXTentacion" Onfroy was killed in Deerfield Beach, and rising rhymer Travon "Jimmy Wopo" Smart was murdered in the Hill District neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

Wiz Khalifa, the platinum-selling artist from Pittsburgh, was a guest onEbro Darden’s Beats 1 radio show. Part of the interview focused on the recent death of Smart.

“Jimmy Wopo is a younger cat from the Burg, and he’s so super talented. He had such a big wave just from his music and where he’s from,” said Wiz. “He’s from the Hill. That’s always been a rowdy area. They really get behind everybody, but it’s crazy over there.”

The Rolling Papers 2 album creator continued, “We were actually signing Jimmy Wopo. He was gonna be signed to Taylor Gang. We were gonna take him on tour with us this summer. That was gonna be his debut.”

Khalifa even insisted the 21-year-old was going to be the next star to emerge from Pittsburgh. He conveyed, “We were about to sign him. Unfortunately, he passed away so we're not going to get the chance to fully expand his career like we wanted to.”

While Wiz is unfortunately unable to properly promote Jimmy Wopo due to the homicide, the Taylor Gang leader still has to move forward with his own career. Swae Lee of Rae Sremmurd united with Khalifa for the new Young Chop-produced record “Hopeless Romantic.”
