So, Joey Badass says first week sales don't matter. Let's talk hip hop

Aight, Joe, the situation is crazy, right? Because Joey Badass says that first week album sales

do not matter, right? He went on Twitter and he said a bunch of stuff. Basically he said

who is buying physical albums anymore? When is the last time you bought a physical album

This doesn't make any sense. Stop trying to make it seem like artists are flopping when really

that they changed the rules and you need to play one song at least a thousand, literally a thousand

times for it to count as one sale. People could stream whatever since the streaming rules have

changed the game. There's no reason why first week album sales should even be taken so seriously

right? I get it from the artist's point of view, that makes a lot of sense, right? He even said

that they're taking the power away from the artists because they don't know how to measure influence, right? And all of that, you know, it's valid. But the whole point is that record labels

care about first week album sales. So they tell the fans to care about it too. And I mean, it's

just not in rap. It's in everything. It's in other genres of music. I mean, even movies, right? If

you have a great first opening weekend at the box office, that means that that director is going to

get another big movie. That producer is going to get another big movie. Those actors are going to

get other bigger movies. You will be recognized to win awards, right? Same thing in music, man

If you make a lot of sales on the first week, I mean, or the first weekend, you know, like Little

Wayne selling a million records back in 2008 or 2007, whatever like that, the record label will

only put more money behind you, right? So where is it kind of sucks? And yeah, I mean, anything to

turn into a classic, like the Lion King is a classic. I don't know how the first week sales did

or the first week box office tickets did in 1995. But everybody watches the Lion King still to today

So an album could become a classic. And so I understand what Joey Badass is saying, right

But the first week sales kind of do matter as well for what's going on now and the current times

right? So either way, I guess we will see. But Joey Badass is one of those type of artists who

yeah, their albums do better over time versus in the first week, right? He's not a clouty artist

He's a quality artist, right? So I see where Joey Badass is coming from because that's the type
