The World Mourns Loss Of Boxing Great Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker

He was Floyd Mayweather before Floyd Mayweather....RIP SWEAT PEA!

By Chris Brown

(AllHipHop Opinion|) I was in a meeting and continuously kept getting text messages. When I was able to look, I found that one of my favorites had died tragically. I'm extremely saddened to hear about the passing of one of my top 3 favorite fighters of all time, Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker. Pernell was absolutely one of the greatest, masterful and supreme defensive fighters the sport of boxing has ever seen – A pure pleasure to watch & one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters of his era.

Pernell was a member of the 1984 Olympic Boxing Dream Team, won a Olympic gold medal that same year, was an esteemed World Champion in 4 separate weight classes (135, 140, 147 & 154), and a 2006 International Boxing Hall of Fame Inductee. I was fortunate to meet him two years ago and he couldn’t have been any more humble and receptive to this crazed boxing fan yelling his name as I hurriedly approached him. Pernell was so gracious in signing my memorabilia, taking photos and taking time to talk to me and my cousin about Boxing, his defensive style and accomplishments in the sport - He really loved his fans!

According to the new, the boxer was killed after getting hit by a car. He was 55. Details are still emerging, but he was struck in his native Virginia, specifically Virginia Beach. A police statement said, "“When officers arrived on scene they located an adult male victim who had been hit by a vehicle. The victim succumbed to his injuries on the scene. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene with police.”

This is a huge loss for Boxing and I send my deepest condolences to all of his loved ones and fans worldwide. One of the Greatest Ever – Gone but Never Forgotten! 🙏🏿🥊🙏🏿 #SweetPea
