Can Modern Hip-Hop Be Traced To 6 MCs?

Mecca’s, a Hip-Hop aficionado that rhymes and works in the game, has concocted a “Hip Hop Lineage Tree” that says that all rap styles in the current era can be traced back to six influential MC’s. These artists are the legend L.L.Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, K.R.S One, Slick Rick and Kool G Rap. Here is the discussion from various bloggers and insiders. Watch and weigh in!

    Geto Boys

    8Ball & MJG

DOWN SOUTH LATE 80s EARLY 90s HIP-HOP and then on.

WAT ABOUT KILLA CAM..HIS SLOW FLOW CHANGED DA GAME

  • Spoonie Gee, TLA Rock , Kool MOE Dee, Grand Master Caz is the real Dna sorry youngins.

  • Tarana Burke

This theory is SO interesting. My only issue is…and with a room full of women I can’t believe this didn’t come up…what about female MCs. Are they all a descendent of either Lyte, Latifah or Sweet T? How do you get to Kreayshawn from there?

  • Simone Profeta Matto Balsano

And what about Sticky fingaz Grimey Style?

  • LL COOL J Did create the Rap Ballad

  • I love all mentioned, they are the best, but their DNA come from Grandmaster Caz, Melle Mel and other pioneers!  They will ALL tell you that as well!

  • IF YOU LISTEN TO THESE CATS YOU WOULD THINK THERE IS NO HIP-HOP OR RAP BEFORE 1985.
THESE SIX CATS GOT HIP-HOP AND RAP FROM SOMEBODY SO YOU ARE CHEATING THE PEOPLE
OF KNOWLEDGE AND CULTURE WHEN YOU DON’T ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR INFLUENCE ON THE SIX
    WHO INFLUENCED THE REST!!!

    • Word!!!

    • ⚡ENERGIZER⚡ISM

Authenticity is the cornerstone of hip hop. We cant discuss (B) AND (C) until we have discussed (A)

  • dope concept

  • yeah nice CONCEPT…POORLY, HORRIBLY executed!! Dude is so wrapped up in his opinion thats he’s all over the place!! How the fk is lil wayne the descendant of G.Rap or slick rick? is he joking? DRAKE?…a descendant of fkn KANE??? maaaan GTFOH!!! All they keep talkin about is sex symbol, have they actually HEARD any kane besides aint no half steppin lol dude couldnt even name “smooth operator” in his example!! LOL Drake hasnt even done 1 socially conscious track or made an attempt to connect with the people or Hip Hop! I’d say he’s close to LL but LL was actually an ILL MC…and most MCs from the 80s were descendants of kurtis blow (the 1st MC signed to a major) or melle mel! when do we talk about that vital piece of history smdh? And this chick wasnt a “fan” of big daddy kane? she shouldnt even be allowed to have an opinion if u ask me cmon lol! Gucci man a decendant of slick rick? HAHAHAHAHA!! you gotta be fuckin joking with this BS!! see this is why it pays to keep the true school pioneers in these convos so you can get properly educated instead of reaching like this guy…I feel what he means but come the fk on kid!! Hip hop is too much of a joke to act so scatter brained..yeah you hold off on that “chart” and holla at KRS or someone more qualified to school the masses…

I think the same thing…Me and You are here (eye to eye) anybody mentioning Lil Wayne, Drake, Big Sean or any of these young kats are off…..They couldn’t have been influenced by them old school rappers because they are way too young when these Ol Skool MC’s were out. The other difference is, these ones named above are all MC’s, not rappers. If you think about it, the 6 rappers dude is starting with, are the ones who rapped about anything and everything. From politics, conscious, chics, gear, parties, EVERYTHING. Eazy E didn’t even write his own rhymes, and I have NEVER heard Drake, Big Sean or Lil Wayne put out anything addressing the plight of US in this wilderness of North America..Nice theory, but he in there debating it with people that aint up on it enuff to shut that foolishness down.

  • …and furthermore isnt it DOCUMENTED that Drake was DIRECTLY influenced by big seans flow & kanye west? isnt it DOCUMENTED that kanye was DIRECTLY influenced by ghostface ‘supreme clientele’? Nas was DIRECTLY influenced by G.rap and COMPAIRED to Rakim…Jay was actually Kanes protege at one point…and LL actually got ALOT of hate when he dropped I need love, it wasnt a deliberate sex thing to sell records like their acting, thats what these new agers do nowadays, def jam didnt even want to put that shit out!! They are constantly bringin up sex symbol and sex appeal like that was a factor back then!! man wtf is going on? In 87 NOBODY was as acting or thinking like these dudes man! They have ZERO qualifications to analyze this shit! this dude is FAR from a genius, he shortening the facts for a little microwaved summary of hip hop when its soooo much history…9 minutes cant sum up OUR CULTURE…what a fail…

What about Chuck D, Scarface, Too Short, Kurtis Blow, Eazy E, Ice Cube, Ice T?

    • Chuck D= KRS.
Scarface Should Be In The List.
Too Short……..Hmm Good Question…….Maybe A Pimpin’ Slick Rick?
Kurtis Blow= Pioneer, In A Different Class.
Eazy E…….If Too Short Was From Compton He Would Be Eazy……So Maybe A Gangsta Slick Rick.
Ice Cube= West Coast Chuck D/ Scarface. So KRS And Face.
Ice T Was Influenced By Schoolly D’s Song “P.S.K.” And KRS-One’s Song “9mm Go Bang”. Said It In The Planet Rock Documentary.
