Lupe Fiasco Joins Public Forum, Explains Why He and DL Hughley Don’t See Eye to Eye on Voting

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Lupe Fiasco made an impromptu visit to a Rap Sessions public forum on “Hip-Hop Activism in the Obama/Tea Party Era” in Philadelphia this past week, where panelists, moments before, had been debating his recent Twitter beef with comedian DL Hughley over the importance of voting.

The Chicago rapper joined the stage at the forum after seeing tweets about the discussion in progress while nearby in the city promoting his new album. He responded to DL Hughley’s claim that “when you vote or not vote, you are saying yes or no,” suggesting the rapper promotes political apathy.

Fiasco explained his belief that political engagement is bigger than the vote, and that during the Twitter exchange, he challenged DL Hughley to put his money where his mouth is and match funds to support a youth program to better the lives of rural and urban youth.

“Taking our community back is not going to happen without money,” Fiasco said reflecting on tweet discussion. “We don’t have to wait til November. We don’t have to wait to vote. Let’s put up $50,000 each right now,” he says he told Hughley.

He told the audience at Philadelphia’s historic Church of the Advocate Wednesday night that Hughley’s response was silence.

“It is difficult to recreate in words the energy in the sanctuary when Lupe – lured in by some live tweeting of panelists discussing his ‘tweef’ with DL Hughley and journalist Roland Martin over his politics – unexpectedly joined the Rap Sessions panel Wednesday night,” said James Peterson, director of Africana Studies at Lehigh University. Peterson, the panel’s moderator, focuses on Hip-Hop artists like Lupe Fiasco, Tupac Shakur, and Nas in his academic research.

“Say what you want to say about whether or not he chooses to vote for presidents,” Dr. Peterson continued. “But PLEASE don’t judge him until you’ve properly heard him out.”

He still ain’t really saying ‘nothin’. lol

    • Black Exodus

How is he not saying anything? He is saying…let’s help poor youth in the urban community now! You put your money where your mouth is! $100,000 right now will help and plant seeds for the children that need it (Computers, Books, Lessons, Teachers, activities and a chance). Remember we don’t don’t pick the president of the united states…the electoral college does…remember that.

It shouldn’t be an “either/or” situation. His piddly $50,000 isn’t going to do shit if there are still policies that are going to hurt the people he claims to want to help. In the long run, he is doing more harm than good. Do you know how voting works? Every vote adds up. He’s influencing kids to stay home and not vote, which will lead to policies being formed that will likely work against them. Then what? They can spend more years bitching about “the system?” It just doesn’t make sense. It’s stupid. He’s on some passive-aggressive shit.

And he doesn’t know what DL does or doesn’t do to help “the community.” For all we know, DL could have done more than Lupe, on that front. Just because DL didn’t play his little game doesn’t mean he’s not doing anything.

And let’s not get started on these many “grass roots” organizations that are poorly run, and even run by thieves and scam artists.

The problems are complex – so will be the solutions. Voting is a VITAL part of it.

      • Mos High

I feel your passion, but you came off quite ignorant. You dont think $100,000 can help some grass roots organizations? you paint all them with same brusg saying poorly run, and even run by theives and scam artists. We can same the same thing a 100X level about the Church, where there is alot more crooks and scam artists, but thats another topic. Zbigniew Brzezinski one Obama’s inital advisors please read on him. Its nice if Obama wins, however he is just the truck driver or puppet, it doesnt start and end with the president. Bottom line is if more money is being pooled together things happen faster.

      • MrWow

Money doesn’t solve everything Mos, DO you know how many grass roots organizations were giving thousands of dollars throughout the 80, and 90’s that have showed no results? You really should research how much money has been set aside for the hoods by organizations that paid themselves off before they took care of the community. And lets be honest here. Does the hood need money or opportunity? Just because someone gives you money doesn’t mean your perception, behaviors, or values change. Why should tax payers waist money on folks that don’t want to change? If your community ain’t doing better because “We The People” want to do better and live in a peaceful healthy environment why should others be forced to help you. Obama has more power than you idiots think and to say the president has no power shows your intelligence. Name one grass roots organization that is doing a better job than the government regarding welfare and healthcare. Voting is hella important on a local and national level. The truth is you and your crew don’t exercise you rights enough to know how powerful voting is. You sound real stupid saying voting doesn’t matter when some group of wealthy folks is paying big money to influence your type of thinking. Freedom and justice starts with the individual taking responsibility for his/her own environment. Lets be honest most of this hip hop culture ain’t fit or built to take on those roles so people like Lupe come off smart but at the end of the day is not doing anything to advance this nation. You can’t win the game if you avoid the rules are don’t study the logic behind the rules. Guessing and belief doesn’t equal logic.

      • MrWow

Yea lets spend money on planting seeds for folks that eat mc donalds and don’t like healthy foods. Lets spend our money on high school drop outs that listen to rick ross and chief keif because they are our future. Sounds like every liberal city that is chaotic right now like CHi Town Lupe home town. We should ask him how that 50,000 has help shape his old hood. Until you niggas denounce the very things that plague our communities, gangs, drug dealers, ho’s, etc things will never change. But you niggas loves music and having too much fun to denounce those things.

Lupe is ignorant and so is anyone esle that encourages people not to vote. Lupe is gotdam fool if he think his 50K gonna save the black youth. The only thing thats gonna save us is education and staying out of prison. Policies not only affect black poeple in those two areas, but numerous areas which can promote our well being. You fools better wake up. DETROIT HARD HEADZ

  • I kinda agree, if we want change now it’s up to us to make it happen, because Obama is not really thinking about the everyday working class people, as much as he is with major corporations.

    • You are sooooo wrong on this accord. how is that so when a lot of the programs that are being supported by his initiatives assist the working poor ESPECIALLY in the realm of EDUCATION… EDUCATION and the opportunities to LEARN will give working class folks more of an opportunity to do FOR THEMSELVES rather than receive some handout which your statement seems like it screams of…

      • maya

Could you be more specific? I’m curious. Is he paying for college and/or prep school?

    • MrWow

It’s always been up to us dude. Thats what the government is here for to be shaped and ran by “We The People”. If We The People don’t value ourselves why should others care. Poor people have enough power to vote those lame ass local politicians in office year after year.

You punks like voting up or down on comments from complete strangers but you don’t wanna vote for people who make laws that control your lives. FOH lol

  • MrWow

Lupe is fake as shit. He ain’t saying anything that has any value. I’ve never heard him denounce the elements that plague the black communities. I’ve heard him glorify them though.

    • ANTMAN

      Ital Rose

Mercy of the Lord on this double-edged sword

Instead of askin’ where the hoes is

Maybe maybe may we have some roses

  • go watch lupe on o’really show and you will see he just says things without having the knowledge to explain why

    • MrWow

I lost all respect for Lupe doing that interview. Here he has a chance to show some knowledge and power and he decided to show his dick instead of having a healthy discussion with a smart intelligent man. He made the culture look like some old unorganized culture that shouts for freedom but runs from responsibility.

      • i feel you

      • Lamar Star

If its black culture in general you’re refering to the image of our culture has already been made a million times over to look unorganized way before Lupe came along with the helping hands of some niggas within the culture itself. I think that we should be able to settle our differences without putting them out in the public for the world to see via twitter and shit, that does make us look unoraganized, but at the same time I think some niggas should be publicly called out for the shit they do. Lupe or some other black celeb before him should have called DL hughly coon ass out for doin shit like soul plane before “not putting your money with your mouth is” became an issue with this nigga. Lupe should be the last one you should be getting at in my opinion, in contrast we have plenty of other rappers, and celebs cooning in the media, not giving back to our communities and intentionaly making us appear to be unorganized to get rich.

  • Ike

If people in general would focus more on what’s right and instilling righteousness, instead of the quick short comings of greed to gain in material possessions instead of gaining in the Spiritual living, Life maybe this World would be a better place to evolve. And as Lupe gave his opinion and a starter to more of a realistic view to turn around the plagues that surround most inner-cities across the U.S.

100k ain’t gon do shit in this day and age. Its like giving an aspirin to cure cancer. Until we try to stop our way of thinking in general it wont work. Many have giving money to programs that fail in the end due to lack of participation by folks its supposed to help
