Aaron McGruder Wants to Make 'Uncle Ruckus' Movie

(AllHipHop News) The Boondocks fans that have been patiently waiting for season four of the animated program to return to television may get a new full length movie instead. Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder announced on The Boondocks Facebook page that he has begun planning the production of a live action version centered around the character Uncle Ruckus.

Gary Anthony Williams, who provides the voice of  Ruckus for the TV show, will star as the self-hating handyman viewers love to hate in The Uncle Ruckus Movie.

But don’t look for Huey, Riley, Grandpa, or any of the other residents of the fictional Woodcrest to make an appearance in the film. McGruder is only focusing on exploring a new storyline for Ruckus. The script will take a look at some part of the Ruckus family that hasn’t been revealed on the show yet.

There have been rumors of a live action Boondocks movie since the cartoon version debuted on Adult Swim in 2005, but in a statement McGruder explains why that has not happened until now.

“There’s always been interest in a live-action Boondocks movie, which to me was out of the question considering Huey and Riley are essentially impossible to cast. The animated feature would cost around 20 million, but a live action Uncle Ruckus movie could cost a fraction of that.”

The only hold up for the film going forward now is funding. As of right now there are no corporate sponsors attached to the project, and even though Sony Studios produces the animated series, the company will not be involved in the production of The Uncle Ruckus Movie.

McGruder has decided to take an independent approach by asking for donations via Kickstarter to help him reach his goal of raising $200,000. Backers who pledge various amounts will receive certain awards for their donation. For example, anyone who pledges $1 or more will receive a digital photo of Uncle Ruckus and a free download of an original Ruckus song. If someone is really supportive of the project they can pledge $10,000 or more and see their name credited as a “co-producer” and also appear in the film. As of this morning the site has already raised over $10,000 from 300 backers.

That’s what’s up! But after 3 succesful seasons of Boondooks & his other projects,I can’t believe that Aaron McGruder don’t have da $200,000 to make this movie. If I invest in this film I want a return on my investment from da profits.

only the richest and most enduring movie makers invest their own money into a project i.e. Steven Speilberg, George Lucas etc…

    • Bro it is very very very expensive to make a film. He doesn’t have Speilberg capital. You have to pay everyone on the show, the tech people and so forth etc. You pay the TV network etc.

      • SpaceAge2012

I realize that, but he’s not making Star Wars or Lord of the Rings bro. This article said,”McGruder has decided to take an independent approach by asking for donations via Kickstarter to help him reach his goal of raising $200,000.” He had Lil Wayne,Luda,Ceelo Green,Busta & alotta other celebs guest star on Boondocks,u mean 2 tell me he can’t get that $ from them 2 fund this project?Weezy’s iced out grill alone is worth more than what he’s askin 4.

      • Celz

That’s not how business works.. Wayne’s grill has nothing to do with this movie.. Wayne is not Aaron’s feed the children sponsor.. So if Wayne funds the movie Wayne wants the profit, by using Kickstarter he can give fans the ability to help and instead of giving them profits he gives them a special item from the movie and/ or the ability to be in it..

That way fans get to be a part of something they would have 0 chance of normally, Wayne can waste or invest his money as he sees fit, and Aaron can make all of the profit while putting his own money into more secure ventures… Win, Win, Win..

  • Q.

EVERYBODY thinks house n!ggas are funny.

    Uncle Ruckus = cartoon minstrel

    • SpaceAge2012

I honestly believe he decided 2 make this movie after he saw black ppl’s reaction 2 Samuel L.Jackson’s character in Django.

      • Celz

Yea Quentin Tarantino beat him to it.. I finally saw Django last night I think it was a pretty good movie..

      • SpaceAge2012

Yea..what did u really like about it?

      • Q.

Tarantino pretty much ripped Stephen from Uncle Ruckus…Damn near a carbon copy. LOL I’m not mad at McGruder for trying to capitalize off of his OWN WORK.

      • SpaceAge2012

That’s exactly what I’m talkin about Q.He’s seen how these niggas can’t stop goin on about it & said,”Shit..if they like that character then I know they’ll love.. a Uncle Ruckus movie.”

    • Actually Aaron is quite militant. He refused to support the BET president at the time BET was black owned and called them out while giving a speech. You have no idea. It is called satire. You must never have watched the boondocks because it makes fun of ignorance and coonery!

      • Q.

Uh huh. I know all about McGruder, the Boondocks and satire. I’ve been a fan of the ‘Docks since the comic strip, bruh. I was just stating a fact, not criticizing. Ruckus is a deliberate minstrel, funny as sh!t I might add.

LOL I’m laughing at the thumbs down I got…you reactionary n!ggas are funny.

Im sure he’s worth millions, but you dont spend your own money to make a movie ever.

    • Q.

      That’s why he’s raising money.

  • just_some_bastard #ALCOHOLIC

    don’t fxck this up.

  • dominicancoke

Allen west juan williams jesse lee peterson and larry elder are competing for the roll of uncle ruckus them some real self hating uncle toms

  • by reading this about an uncle ruckus movie it kinda sounds wack he shud jus focus on season 4 of the boondocks and i wonder what exactly does he do with his boondocks money askin ppl 4 donations

smh does your lousy ass understand how movies and shows are produced? he’s not Steven Speilberg he needs investors

    • Celz

donations and support are two different things.. especially on kickstarter you actually get something in return for supporting a project.. he’s not asking for handouts

The show is written with satirical brilliance so I’m sure the movie is driven by political agenda… I’m all for it because there are plenty of real Uncle Rukus characters in this world and they are rarely exposed or exploited… Looking forward to see this movie come into fruition.

  • to be honest I’d rather that they make a new season of the show instead of a movie on uncle ruckus.

    • Abrasive Angel

Season 4 is already made and is in the lineup.

  • Abrasive Angel

Y’all should see the video. The guy who does Ruckus voice is dressed up in the makeup and everything but I can’t put down any cash if Huey or Riley aren’t making a cameo in someway as live action.

  • tammy m

Aaron needs to fund this on his own, there are plenty of film directors that have used their own capital to fund first time projects. I think he should be more concerned with making sure season 4 is hit, before branching off into a live action film.
Shoot, he co-wrote Red Tails, why not ask George Lucas for part of the capital.
the reason he does want to fund this with a big studio or even small studio, is because their not dumb. Creative control aside, the media bash, political flack, and drama this film with serve is not worth it.
This is not a star vehicle, nor sound investment.
