(AllHipHop News) Queens raised rapper Ja Rule, born Jeffrey Atkins, is on the verge of being released from prison, after serving time for the illegal possession of a firearm in Manhattan, New York in 2010.

According to the Associated Press, while his sentence for the firearm was shortened for good behavior, Ja Rule will go straight into federal custody to finish his sentence for tax evasion.

Although the sentences ran concurrently, Ja Rule still has a little less than six months of a 28 month-long tax evasion sentence, and he could end up serving the remainder of sentence in a half-way house.

While in jail, Ja Rule was on relatively good behavior only picking up two misbehavior reports for unauthorized phone calls in February 2012.

Ja Rule completed his work assignments on lawn and grounds crews and even participated in education programs according to his attorney, Stacey Richman.

Ja Rule will likely be looking to get back to work soon as he still owes the IRS over $1 million in back taxes and unpaid fines.

In 2010 New York City police found a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic gun in the back door of Ja Rule’s $250,000  car after being pulled over for speeding.

Then in March 2011 in federal court Ja Rule admitted that he was negligent in paying taxes on more than $3 million of money he earned between 2004 and 2006 while he living in Saddle River, N.J..

“I in no way attempted to deceive the government or do anything illegal,” Ja Rule told the judge. “I was a young man who made a lot of money — I’m getting a little choked up — I didn’t know how to deal with these finances, and I didn’t have people to guide me, so I made mistakes.”

No word on Ja Rule’s plans for linking up with Murder Inc., but he has said he is working on Pain is Love 2.
