Open Letter To Rick Ross From A Music Industry Vet

Editor’s Note: Dee dee cocheta is an industry vet that has had a long tenure in music. Her career spans PR & Social Media Professional, digital content producer, blogger and more. She writes an open letter to Rick Ross after a recent song seems to advocate date rape. Rick Ross has not commented. While rape, real or suggested, is horrific and completely objectionable, the views in this open letter are dee dee’s.

Greetings William,

I am writing you a letter because I have sat back and observed long enough. I am coming to you as a ‘sister’ of the human family we all belong to. WE are connected! AND you my brother, I am tired of hearing negative things about you and now I am mad at how you are treating yourself. So please do not take this wrong or feel I am coming at you to scold or beat you up with my words. I am coming to you because I CARE and LOVE YOU!

What brought me to the point of writing this open letter was after reading ALLHIPHOP.com Hip-Hop Rumors on your new song, “U.O.E.N.O.” (you ain’t even know it) titled: YOWZA! New Rick Ross Lyric Will Upset Smart Women! So yeah I’m a little upset and rightfully so as the lyric you wrote about refers to ‘date rape’ and is exactly how I lost my virginity; someone STOLE it at the age of 14 before entering in high school. I take responsibility for being at a party I had no business being at but I want you to know how scary this now 41-year-old woman felt to wake up to blood on the sheets with an aching pain and empty feeling, that your heart is sunken where you feel you lost something. Well I did, I lost the right to choose whom I wanted to share that special moment with because I was knocked out and taken advantage of. See William, your lyric doesn’t educate it only further glamorize what fools like that man did to me 27 years ago. I happen to believe in karma and I know that man got his without me having to lift a finger.

William, I’m concerned about your health and your life messing with the wrong people and feel you are not listening to the GOD in you. I believe things that are happening to you now is because it’s GOD saying SLOW THE EFF down, get control of your life, you are not on the path destined. William, that means not at the expense of yourself or others. I understand this entertainment industry with expertise of over 20 years and can impart wisdom as I just shared my experience with date rape. Additionally, in my youth, I have been associated with gang members, dealt with being a borderline diabetic so weight/eating has always been an issue for me most of my life and basically led a self-destructed life. Why? because I really did not love myself. Additionally, I have 7 children and 3 grand babies (known to many as the Hip-Hop Mama) where I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer… So William, I’m not the type of mom, sister or friend that judges let alone condone certain things, I take accountability for my actions, I take responsibility for how I live and educate my children; making them aware of as much as I can in life – good and bad, never hiding truth and the ugliness this world has to offer. Right now though I am in the process of healing self and fully loving me. I believe this may be something missing in your life. I am sure you are trying to work on your health issues?!!? I am not sure what’s going on with all this gang/gun/court mess but I do not like it and I have been praying and meditating on you for a while.

“You must choose your battles wisely.” Words I have heard and keep hearing because I did not learn my lesson until now…

William, those lyrics on date rape to your actions all say to me you need help and healing yet we cannot take that first step for you. YOU MUST CHOSE A SIDE and not at the expense of your health, your life or to further perpetuate the hurt and pain of others.

William, we are all survivors, KINGS and QUEENS! I hope you make your way back to being able to show us that courage and strength. Being vulnerable is not a sign for weakness; it shows you are a man. I will continue to pray yet this is a call for you to take some other type of action before you will be another fallen Hip-Hop artist like so many others we lost. I believe and LOVE YOU WILLIAM. Please show me something different good!

RESPECTFULLY, your sister

dee dee “Hip-Hop Mama” cocheta

lets be real before C.O Williams had money he paid for sex ( one of his baby moms is a hooker) or he took it ala his date rape bars. who talk about that? oh yea people who do it

Do You honestly think he gives a damn, when he wright´s lyrics of such sort for money, doo you? Your energy is very positive but thrown out for someone who doesnt care unless his label forces him to give in. Ahki Peace MCBEE-X
PS bye the way your concept is well desreved but driven in ones direction who is against what you stand for. Good Luck! Dee Dee

These rappers say a lot of bullshit all the time and people are so used to it, that they pay it no mind. I even hate when rappers laugh at people and say “you broke, I’m rich”. I think that exhibits bad character and boastfulness. But what I’m saying is, labels sign these artists with bad attitudes and no moral code but then pretend to care when that artist showcases more of his/her ignorance and gets called on it.

    • Dee

“you broke, I’m rich” thats all they doing stuntin on they own people

  • foh

The fk outta here with that unrestrained sincerity. All that ‘cos I love u’ bs is played out. Paedophiles are from the human family too, the bitch love them too?!

    • Truth

Just because we live in a nation full of inconsiderate and rude people, it doesn’t make her one of them. How many people would take the time to actually write a letter expressing concern without meaning it?!! As a colleague of Dee Dee, this women means what she says and comes from a place a pure love…so respect her thoughts!

  • Damn, Ross is getting more open letters than real letters lately. Even this lady is calling him bogus.

  • Muzic

She can’t speak English. I had to stop reading after spotting 5 very basic grammatical errors. It’s “self-destrucIVE” not self-destructed. “…in my youth I HAD been associated…”

    • brotha_man

as long as u get the message, school teacher

      • disqus_w6685Q17gK

Brotha man…this is how you be sarcastic—> Hey, you should start your sentences with a capital letter and end it with the correct punctuation, kid in the back of the class!

      • brotha_man

The back of the class got me to college with a MBA in finance. Now I’m paid in full as a budget analyst. Get yo mind right it’s just a forum. Sucka.

        *takes sip of water*
. see, i do this from my iphone. while u prob do this from yo’ baby mama laptop

      • disqus_w6685Q17gK

Man please….now I know about you and your supposed MBA and your job as a budget analyst…but you knownothing about me or my baby mama. To whom I refer to as my wife! And for it being just a forum…they why did you become un-clued…Sucka!

      • brotha_man

It doesn’t matter. At the end of the day we all brothas and sistas in the pursuit of happiness. Best of luck my brotha

      • Danny

Maybe your daughter, baby mama or mother will get date raped a rapper looking like Rick Ross. See how much you will care about grammar hahaha

      • Dee

lol teach that nigga brotha man

    • Truth

So you’re worried more about the grammatical errors in her letter than the content of the song?!! That’s the problem…

      • disqus_w6685Q17gK

Truth is, Mr. Truth, she should be able to do both…Deliver a meaningful message and write well. She is a blogger and industry veteran, with experience in digital content and social media? Hell, this is an “Open” letter, that is being published.

      • Truth

But you spelled self-destructive incorrectly as well! Open letters are written with feelings and from the heart…most people look over grammatical errors

      • disqus_w6685Q17gK

Not once did I spell or mispell self-destructive.

      • Truth

Okay…you win! Just check your comments next time…before you hit post.

    • destruc(t)ive

    • GTFOOH

Your comment was so uncalled for and also serves as yet another distraction from the real issue. The only thing you could come up with was you could not finish the article because it had 5 very distinct grammatical errors? @Allhiphop where in the hell do you find these lame ass, dumb down, book smart, that have no common sense people? Oops that’s right, this is a coon site so nothing but coons respond here smdh.

this is some real ish i wish more people would reach out this way. she is absolutely correct with this there are a lot of woman who struggle to heal, and our sistas behind bars are there because of the actions of a man, in most cases. i feel her on this, when is it ever cool to rap about rape…..that dont make u a king. its said that we treat our woman and children like ish, but treat Kim K, amber rose like goddess.

    • infinit221

I agree..the issue is too real for too many women. Ross failed on this one

  • chippc

Why do people write “open letters”? i could be wrong, but it doesnt seem any of them ever come from a genuine place of sincerity. All this Popeyes chicken , BECAUSE I LUVS YOU BS reeks of self promotion. Now we all know the “self proclaimed” mother of hip hop. Mission accomplished. And if you are the “mother of hip hop” couldn’t you get this letter to William personally?

    • Truth

She was given the name Hip Hop Mama…not the Mother of Hip Hop…two different things! And there is more to her than what you read in the open letter…she is truly a positive spirit!

      • chippc

Ok I can respect all of that, but that doesnt take away from the fact that if she really wanted to “help”, she would not have wrote an open letter. An open letter is the equivalent of an online petition form. It’s a lazy way to pretend that you concerned enough to change something or somebody.

However I will google the sister, and see what she is about.

      • she might be speaking for all women & the lyric isn’t private..why should the response be?

  • infinit221

I’m usually quick to support Ross against the flock, but I didn’t like this verse when it came out about a month ago. Ross failed here, no doubt. Some issues are just too sensitive even for hardcore rap

  • Darren Myt Collins

I mean, I’m not surprised he would rap some lyrics like this. I mean look at him….I don’t judge dudes and all but like nas said….”WHAT YOU THINK YOU GETTING GIRLS NOW CAUSE OF YOUR LOOKS?” lol! Ross is built like a soggy baked potato. He gotta do what he gotta do. But to be serious…these lyrics are deplorable. But it just goes to show these dudes say whateva…whenever and are not held accountable. Just like the Wayne Emmit till line. But also, what do we expect from these dudes…they have been consistent with their negative self destructive lyrics. TheyRE content consist of money drugs, sex, murder. Thats it. But I do have a problem with our SELECTIVE OUTRAGE…including myself. There have been alot of rappers that have said some foul shyt for entertainment and shock value. Biggie said he would “shoot your daughter in the calf muscle” Eminem rapped about murdering and raping women all the time. But it was dismissed as entertainment and shock value. Just saying……I’m not a Ross fan…but there has been some digusting lyrics said by people we deem legends way before Ross…..is what it is……..”RAP IS OUT OF CONTROL”

  • disqus_w6685Q17gK

    Powerful story, great message…terrible writing!

  • Had a degree of truth in it but way too dramatic

  • As a fan of rap, I sincerely wish Rick Ross and others like them would just go away. It used to be we accepted an amount of foolishness in rap lyrics because it was reflecting actual street life. Or even if the rappers weren’t “real” gangster, at least their stories were entertaining and their rhymes were tight. Everyone knows Rick Ross isn’t and has never been a gangster, plus he’s not even entertaining and his rhymes are lacking. He basically says one line, says something else, and then says that first line again. That’s not rhyming. You can make anything rhyme is you keep saying the same word over and over.
Tupac wasn’t the best lyricist, but he had depth. Biggie wasn’t exactly a revolutionary but he could rap about anything.
    But that’s just me…

when i first clicked on the headline i figured it would b someone trying to get some publicity but the way this is written she is just letting him know that those lyrics are just plain dumb. i dont know who she is but i respect her. she didnt blast him talk shit or get “ratchet” as they say. She came cool, calm, and collected just letting him know her perspective on the lyrics. my personal thoughts on the situation are if you have to drug a woman to have sex with you you are a lame and have no game whatsoever so why anybody would rap about it is beyond me.

  • Southcidal

It ain’t nuthin but music. How many here thinks that Rick Ross really sells cocaine? Its just music. Let the man live. Damn.

I am a father of a lovely daughter and would never wish what happened to you on anyone.I just feel there are alot of double standards in the music industry especially hiphop.Rappers like eminem for example can get away with lots of stuff and no one talks about it.Too many Hypocretes in this Music industry. Its alright for hollywood to explore such topics because it does happen in real life but when the rappers are talkin bout real life situations, they are the worst people in the world because they are deemed not inteligent enough to explore such issues.I feel its just being ignorant.just like when nas was going to call his album the N word.It turned out to be an inteligent album.Rick ross said himself he doesnt condone rape just like the terminator aka fomer governor doesnt condone killing cops.

    • RichFromBX

two reasons why I think this differs from Em and even DMX…
1- we’re living in a different world, we’ve let the PC Police invade every other aspect of life, it was only a matter before hiphop was going to be next
2-the situations Em and DMX describe are movie like scenarios that go beyond “normal” life whereas what Rick Ross talks about is an all to common occurrence and is a real life life thing – Look at Steubenville, that girl was more than drunk and rumored to have been slipped a roofy by another guy while drinking on the way to the party – of course this is only a rumor because the drug is untraceable after 24hrs…Ross put it in to a perspective like “fvck, she at the club, I’m buying her drinks – that pu$$y is owed to me and I’m getting it” which is the thought process of an actual rapist…

all I can is nothing she said it and wasn’t scared of any negative backlash and I think more artist need to be fronted out and cleansed the same way.I’m am 41 years old and never afraid to say my age because I have come from a long journey to wisdom and still learning to correct my short comings as well as still dwell in this crazy ass music business. The shyt I see with the music that has saved my life as a youth has today’s youth ignorant and dumb trying to keep up with the game.Music is not a game but some have taken this attitude as if it is the best mindset. As a MC you represent those who are disenfranchised , look to your lyrics to free what they feel on certain topics they relate to.I have made many comments on this site probably not agreed with but for sure I’ll die for hip hop the purity of the genre has become be- littled soul-dead.As long as my generation sits back and says nothing it will continue.Just like jazz when it started to water down the old artist were upset and have every right to be.Watch what you say it can end your career. One Love to my real brothers who love the authentic hip hop there are lines that say too far, stay provocative not imitating and trying to eat sounding and immulating the next artist because it’s hot,hot don’t last long will the integrity of your rap life last long….for any artist signed or not ask yourself that.

Someone had to tell him. Unfortunately, he’s not the only one who rap VERY NEGATIVE things about women. In addition, the young people deem this as music, and spend their pocket money on encouraging these fools to keep disrespecting them, while financing their lifestyles.
